Cleansing Raw Energy Soup

Spring marks a time of renewed energy, growth, and longer days of sunlight. As this season relates to the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, we experience new ideas with the energy to put them into action, which is associated with the rising estrogen of our inner spring phase.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the seasons spring and autumn are the best times to do a cleanse, as these are major transitional seasons leading into expansion (summer) and contraction (winter).

In TCM, spring energy relates to the liver, and autumn energy relates to the colon. Every spring, I like to do a cleanse to support the liver to aid in its detoxification process, and in autumn, I like to do a cleanse that supports the colon in elimination.

By cleansing in the spring, it helps my body adjust to the changes that are about to occur: the plants waking up, the flowering pollen in the air, the drastic shifts between windy rainstorms and sunny, warm days. Living in the midwest, it’s common to experience 30 degree weather shifts overnight!

I used to have terrible allergies in the spring, yet this is so much better now that my liver and immune system are functioning well.

A well functioning liver not only helps with seasonal allergies, but also helps with the metabolism of excess hormones, such as estrogen. This can prevent hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance, which can contribute to issues like fibroids, endometriosis, and Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

How to Cleanse?

The cleanses I partake in usually consist of juicing low glycemic fruits and vegetables most of the day, drinking warm chaga tea with coconut oil, and then eating a blended energy soup for dinner.

A cleanse of consuming mostly liquids gives the digestion a system a rest from the constant breakdown of foods. When your body experiences this rest, it can focus its energy on the other metabolic processes as well as flush out extra toxins that may have accumulated from eating foods with pesticides, and using products and household cleaners with chemicals.

My Cleansing Raw Energy Soup is a recipe in my medicine cabinet. “Energy soup” is a concept I learned in my raw food chef-ing training back in 2011. It consists of blending vegetables with probiotics from chickpea miso, then topping with nutrient dense foods and spices like dulse seaweed, hemp seeds, and turmeric spice.

In addition, it contains liver supporting foods such as greens like parsley, and sour lemon, which both aid in the liver. The flavor sour is said to stimulate liver Qi, the life-force energy that runs through this organ meridian.

This recipe is similar to a Gazpacho, which is eaten raw. Cooking food can destroy some of the beneficial enzymes and nutrients such as glutathione. Glutathione is an important antioxidant in plants that aids in the liver’s detoxification process. Cooking reduces glutathione in food, which is why it’s important to consume foods in their raw form in the diet.

Energy soup may be a new concept to you and it’s a beautiful way to give your digestive system a break while loading your body with colorful, nutritious vegetables and probiotics. I would love to hear how this recipe turns out in your kitchen!

Springs Blessings & Hormone Health!

Note: When cleansing, the body may go through physical detox symptoms such as headaches, bloating, and breakouts. These are toxins pushed to the surface. Be kind to yourself, take lots of rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Better to get the junk out now than leave it stored it in your body! Emotionally, as Qi energy moves and flows, this may bring up stored emotions. Give yourself space and time to reflect on your life such as meditation or writing in your journal while on your cleanse.
